When you talk to our experts or look for a solution on our website, a certain term may appear that requires a little explanation. Below, you’ll find a list of terms we use within the world of PHI DATA. Discover what they mean.

Automatic identification

Your goods are first coded in Automatic Identification processes. This is done through barcode printing or RFID coding. In a subsequent phase, you scan these codes and register them directly using computer systems. There is no need for anyone to actually read or write anything. This increases the speed at which processes run, while reducing those errors that inevitably arise when working with pen and paper.

There are three diverse technologies and symbol systems for generating and capturing codes, such as 1D or 2D barcodes and RFID. Companies are usually free to choose their own symbology and coding agreements internally. But for some sectors and products, they are set by a standardising body, such as GS1.

PHI DATA helps you to find the right identification solution for your application.

The term ‘data capture’ refers to the additional data that may be added when scanning. Examples include place or location, time and date, weight, employee, extra scans and so forth. This is recorded in a file.

Barcode

A barcode makes it easy to identify objects or people. As well as the traditional 1D or linear barcodes, there are 2D barcodes, also known as matrix barcodes. These rasters with square ‘spots’ are capable of storing more data because both the horizontal and vertical planes are used. While a scanner only reads 1D barcodes, an image scanner will read both 1D and 2D barcodes.

Condition Monitoring

Among its many uses, wireless Condition Monitoring allows you to continuously measure the temperature in your warehouses, cold rooms and transport vessels. This happens with the assistance of RFID technology (see also RFID) and tags. Thanks to Condition Monitoring, you can not only keep a close eye on temperature, but also the CO2 level and humidity.

Labelling

Barcode or RFID solutions only truly come into their own right when on a high-quality carrier. An efficient labelling solution is therefore a must. There are many different types of labels, such as thermic and thermal transfer paper, polyethylene, polypropylene or polyester. We even offer different options for the layer of glue on the label; let us whether you would like removable, (extra) permanent or deep-freeze-proof glue. Would you like to optimise your efficiency? We will automate your labelling process for you (see also ‘Print and Apply’).

Field Force Automation

Field Force Automation is designed to reinforce and increase the efficiency of your mobile workers. With IDfield, we offer you a solution that centrally manages planning, operation, coordination and reporting, even allowing you to check on workers ‘in the field’, all in real time. Your workers can also give their input and feedback about their activities via our mobile application, contributing to equally efficient Field Force Automation.

IDasset®

This inventory solution first registers all your assets in order to follow up on them quickly and correctly at a later stage. Your assets may be from highly diverse areas, such as rolling stock, tools, furniture or IT equipment. It is also possible to use IDasset to perform on-site corrections with possible inventory or location differences, and also record defects or other anomalies that are identified.

This solution improves your view of and optimises the management of your assets. Use it to optimise the use of all your resources. It also ensures you have the correct details at hand during audits and checks, and avoids downtime or unavailability by making a more efficient approach to maintenance possible.

IDdelivery®

With these Smart Edge solutions, you organise and follow up the delivery of your goods in a highly efficient manner. All packages, pallets or containers are given a barcode that is linked to the packaging slip. With the user-friendly mobile device with its inbuilt scanner—linked to the database in real time—the sender is able to quickly register every action. This allows IDdelivery to check whether the right package is being loaded onto the right truck and delivered to the right destination. Every article is scanned by the client, after which the receiver can sign for their delivery on the screen. Returns or defects and damaged goods can be flawlessly managed this way too. The mobile computer is also able to process any transactions where payment is made with a debit card.

IDdelivery reduces the administrative operations, raises the productivity and reduces errors and post-delivery discussions. Thanks to the real-time connection, faster invoicing is also possible. This all leads to shorter cycles and lower costs.

IDfresh

This solution is particularly aimed at delivery companies working with major food retailers. IDfresh contains hardware and software to manage the entire delivery cycle. Use IDfresh to print off pallet labels, scan unique packages or crates on the pallets, and send all information through in the form of standardised and detailed electronic delivery slips. It is also possible to transform the delivery slips into electronic invoices.

IDstock®

This Smart Edge solution for stock management is aimed at anyone who works with highly diverse and quick stock rotation: project supplies, spare parts or consumables. It saves your staff from typing in stock transactions for these materials—a time-consuming practice. At the same time, it allows you to follow up the costs for each department or project you’re involved in. With IDstock, barcode or RFID labels and mobile devices, it’s easy to quickly manage, receive and transfer stock to other locations.

This solution makes the location management of such goods more efficient, reducing the need for available storage space. Furthermore, it reduces the administrative work, saving you time and slashing errors. With this Smart Edge solution, you also avoid stock shortages and unnecessary orders.

IDsuite

Smart Edge solutions for your workplace

The work environment where your productions and logistics take place is the beating heart of your company or institution. It is the place where your physical logistics chains encounter your ICT. This where we talk about the ‘Smart Edge’.

To help make your different business processes run more quickly and efficiently, PHI DATA Smart Edge offers mobile software solutions that respond to the needs of different sectors. Our suite of ID software makes use of innovative auto-ID technologies. As well as this, the solutions immediately process the data in the workplace, performing fast, flawless transactions, creating instant alarms in the event of deviations and providing relevant data with an eye on reporting or business intelligence. Of course, all these Smart Edge solutions integrate smoothly with your back-end systems.

The most important solutions in this suite are: IDasset, IDstock, IDdelivery and IDwms.

IDvoice

If you benefit from fast, hands-free order picking, our speech operated solution, IDvoice, offers an interesting alternative to scanning (see also ‘Voice technology’). When you work with IDvoice, operators receive their instructions from the Warehouse Management System. Using the microphone, they are also able to react. Our IDvoice solution is based on technology from the German company topSystem.

IDwms®

This Smart Edge Warehouse Management solution is aimed at fully synchronising the information stream with the movements of the goods on the work floor. This happens on the basis of barcodes and Wi-Fi. The basic principle of IDwms is that every ‘carrier’—usually a pallet—in the warehouse is given a unique number on an identification label; this is the foundation of every movement of goods. By scanning it with an industrial handheld computer, you’re connected in real time with the warehouse database. The use of speech-recognition technology is also available for environments where there is a lot of fast manual picking and the hands/eyes need to be free.

One of the great benefits of IDwms is that the stock is always up to date. As well as this, the number of errors drops, and the administrative work in receiving, put-away and shipping is also reduced. Users of the system have also noted an increase in productivity and better real-time visibility.

IIoT

In full, IIoT stands for the Industrial Internet of Things (see also ‘Internet of Things’). With our Industrial Internet of Things software platform, you manage simple IoT connected devices that identify your goods, equipment, transport carriers, people and locations, and follow their positions and statuses. At the same time, you observe the conditions of their environment—temperature, humidity or CO2 level. We use RFID tags and sensors for this.

Inbound-Outbound

To increase the efficiency of the inbound and outbound streams in your warehouse, we offer an Inbound-Outbound Management solution. This is based on RFID tags and shrewdly placed doors and antennas that make it possible to read goods and/or assets unmanned and without a clear, uninterrupted line of sight. This solution is suitable for both distribution and production environments.

IoT

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a term used for the linking of devices via the internet to allow them to change data. Examples include smart thermostats and refrigerators. Thanks to the IoT, ‘things’ are able to be read, localised and controlled via the internet. We at PHI DATA are responding to this important trend, providing support and insight as greater numbers of intelligent devices connect to the internet. For specifically industrial applications, we have also created a dedicated IIoT platform (see also ‘IIoT’).

LabelEasy

With our all-in-one labelling solution, LabelEasy, we strive to make the labelling process as simple for you as possible. You pay a competitive price per label and PHI DATA takes care of the rest. We present you with a supply plan for labels and related accessories and materials, and an all-in maintenance plan. When you use LabelEasy, you don’t need to make any investments in advance.

Maintenance Management

If you have chosen a hardware and/or software solution, reliable Maintenance Management is important to guarantee business continuity. At PHI DATA, we propose a service agreement tailored to your needs. We guarantee you the right type of contract and technical assistance within the response times agreed upon. Via our client portal, you easily self-manage the maintenance and repair of equipment.

MobileView

MobileView is powerful and user-friendly software for following the locations and statuses of goods and people. This web-based application includes functions such as visualisation, reporting, management and automatic alarms. MobileView is a solution from Stanley Healthcare – AeroScout, global market leader in Enterprise Visibility solutions.

Proof of Delivery

Whenever you send goods, you want to be sure that they’ve been received. With a Proof of Delivery solution, you automatically receive a confirmation, together with the time of delivery. The recipient signs for them on the delivery driver’s mobile device or allows their ID card to be read. The device also passes on information about problems with the delivery. The Proof of Delivery is automatically included in our IDdelivery solution (see above).

Real-time localisation – Track & trace

It’s becoming ever more important for companies and organisations to be able to localise goods, assets and people. As they move in the logistics chain, we want to be able to track & trace them. This means that we want to follow goods, loading units and vehicles in real time—both internally and externally—with help from localisation, communication and registration systems.

A good localisation and track & trace system allows the visibility of goods and assets to be increased, as a result of which bottlenecks and areas for improvement can be spotted in a timely manner. By setting up certain perimeters (geo-fencing), you can prevent dangerous situations or disappearances. At the same time, the underlying technology makes it possible to continuously supply employees or clients with the right information about their transactions and schedules.

RTLS applications are also suitable for access checks. And in the healthcare sector, they help prevent mentally incapacitated patients from wandering away from safety. With extensive experience in the field of RTLS, PHI DATA has all the knowledge and insight required to provide Smart Edge solutions from A to Z, on the basis of different technologies.

Real-time (condition) monitoring

As goods or assets are sensitive to and subject to changing environmental conditions, you can use real-time monitoring to respond to certain events or changes. In sectors where controlling the temperature, humidity and CO2 levels is crucial, real-time condition monitoring has major added value.

PHI DATA offers diverse technologies and solutions that make real-time condition monitoring possible, independent of the specific needs or environment. We make it possible to identify people or objects automatically, follow them in real time, and monitor their condition, sounding alarms if set limitations are exceeded. The objects or people given RFID tags that contain specific sensors. Permanent reference beacons (e.g. Wi-Fi or BLE) receive radio signals from these active RFID tags.

An innovative technology in this context is the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). In this framework, PHI DATA uses their SmartSense cloud platform to offer a powerful software platform for the management of IoT connected devices that identify goods, equipment, transport carriers, people and locations, follow them and monitor them. The platform is able to be used for a broad scale of industrial, logistics and healthcare applications, offering full end-to-end IIoT solutions ranging from the RFID tags and sensors to tools for analyses/alarms and reporting.

RFID

A number of our solutions make use of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification). RFID systems are built from an antenna and a transceiver (often contained in the one device) and a transponder (the tag). The antenna sends out a signal that activates the transponder, which then sends back data. One advantage of RFID tags over barcodes is that they do not need to have a direct line of sight for scanning.

There are passive and active tags. Passive tags do not have an energy source of their own and draw their energy from the RFID receiver to send a signal back. The reading distance for such a tag is limited to a few metres. Active tags do have an internal energy source (a battery), that gives the tag the energy to send a signal to the reader. The reading distance may be as much as several hundred metres. Active tags also perform better when in transit with large amounts of metal or water. For Condition Monitoring (see above), specific tags may be used.

RTI Management

This stands for the management of transport packaging or Returnable Transport Items (RTIs). They include pallets, crates, bins and roll containers. At PHI DATA, we use RFID technology to manage reusable transport packaging. This allows you to make optimal use of RTIs and limit the loss rations.

RTLS

Real-Time Location Systems (RTLS) allow you to determine the location of goods or people in real time. This positioning uses strategically placed antennas and RFID tags. Mojix has proven to be an important partner for us in the area of RTLS support in industry and logistics. With the ViZix platform, they enable you to make heat maps and perform analyses of detailed statistics. In the healthcare sector, we have MobileView from Stanley Healthcare for positioning.

Scanning

Scanning captures the information from barcodes or tags. This information then helps, for example, to store or process items in the correct place. Today, although there is a wide range of scanners, we tend to think only about handheld or fixed laser scanners and digital imagers. There are also robust scanners for highly demanding environments. Furthermore, we offer scanners that do not register barcodes, but automatically record the dimensions of objects. For barcode scanning in various sectors, we invest in high-quality scanners from, Zebra, Honeywell and Datalogic, among others.

Serialisation

Serialisation goes a step further. With serialisation on an article level, all separate products from a single article are given unique identification codes. This identification makes every individual product from a production series unique, ensuring maximum traceability from the factory to the point of sale. You’re then able to confirm the authenticity of medicines throughout the supply chain. The benefits of this are particularly high in relation to the FMD (Falsified Medicine Directive) and the TPD (Tobacco Products Directive) for the tobacco industry.

Serialisation can certainly bring great challenges with it. At the FMD, the master data and transaction data must be linked with each other in real time when the physical product is scanned. Plus, it’s necessary to add aggregation steps, to connect a package with a box, and then the box to a pallet, using a so-called parent-child relationship. Companies incorporate serialisation under regulatory pressure—cf. the pharmaceutical or tobacco industries—to arm them against fake ‘grey imports’ or tax evasion.

As well as this, logistics services often use an SSCC code or Serial Shipping Container Code. They allow companies to identify a logistic unit that may consist of any combination of traded goods that are packed together for storage or transport. Typical examples are boxes, pallets or packages.

Feel free to contact PHI DATA for any questions you may have regarding the potential benefits of serialisation for your company.

Voice technology

Voice technology is an interesting alternative to scanning in environments where it’s important to be able to work very quickly and hands-free. A system based around speech recognition (see also ‘IDvoice’) allows employees to work with a portable computer worn on the hip that is connected to a headset through which they hear the tasks they need to perform. Voice technology is most suitable for use in order picking, but also provides added value when receiving goods.

Work Floor Automation

The goal of Work Floor Automation is to make processes run automatically and more efficiently. As a lot of environments benefit from this, the Work Floor Automation solutions from PHI DATA are suitable for production environments, warehouses and hospitals, among others. Depending on the sector, we will propose an efficient total solution for easy identification and mobility on the work floor.

Wifi Check

‘Help! The Wi-Fi has gone!’ If you regularly hear this, you’ll want to turn to our experts for a Wi-Fi Check. We examine your infrastructure, meaning we check the coverage, measure interference and guarantee secure communication between your Wi-Fi infrastructure and devices. Furthermore, we examine your wireless devices and make sure you have a good general set-up. With the Wi-Fi Check, you also receive a report that includes recommendations.

WLAN

To be able to implement mobile solutions, a reliable and secure network is a must. For this, we call on the WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network). It uses radio signals to send and receive data. WLANs give real-time access to information and usually offer a more secure service hatch for your business-critical information than a cable network.
